I could've written most of Cindy's post.......the part about being an absentee blogger and surviving March. Truly. What a month. What happened, you ask?
- The Graduate opened on Feb 29th and ran through March 17th
- Thea turned 7. EEK.
- Thea was in her first Children's show, which ran the 28th - 30th
- I turned 37. Double-eek.
- On this past Tuesday afternoon, I got a desperate call from a local theater company that they needed a stage manager. I stepped in Tuesday night, ran a cue-to-cue rehearsal Wednesday night, dress rehearsal Thursday night and opened Friday night. Yeah, really. We had a show Saturday night and have two more this coming weekend.
- I am also deep in Festival prep.
- Work is going beautifully and I love the job
So - a couple highlights: On Thea's birthday, we went to dinner at Bugaboo Creek. She didn't like her chicken fingers (and in truth, neither did I). She shared my steak, so all was fine. We ordered dessert and hers came complete with a moose-puppet toting, singing staff. She ordered a gigantic chocolate chip cookie that is served in a skillet with a big scoop of ice cream. Yum, right? Well, yeah, until they put the thing on the table with the handle of the skillet pointing directly at her belly and DIDN'T warn her that it just came out of an oven. And her asshole mother didn't think to warn her either. OY. Yes, you all know what's coming. She grabbed the handle to stabilize the plate while scooping out a big bite. She got a very nice first degree burn across her palm and the webbing between her thumb and index finger. We had her hold her cold drink cup against the burn. We put aloe on it when we got home and by the next morning, it was a mere memory. However, it was a really shitty way to end your birthday dinner. And of course, after the burn, she was then AFRAID of her dessert. So I used my napkin as a hot mitt, lifted the skillet and scooped the cookie out onto the plate. I don't think she much enjoyed it, but at least she didn't have to fear it. I do have to say that the recovery by the restaurant was very good. The manager on duty came right over. The general manager called the next day. The VP of HR called on Wednesday, listened to our story and sent us a couple gift certificates. She also promised to speak to the President and Sr. Ops VP about the one thing that I wanted to come from the incident. I want them to at least consider changing their service standards and never put a hot skillet on the table in front of a little person ever again. It took seconds for me to take the cookie out of the skillet and onto the plate. I don't think it would jam up their expo line and it would certainly limit their liability.
Monday morning, before school, Thea says to me, "Mommy, yesterday didn't feel very much like a birthday." Yeah.....talk about breaking a mother's heart. I picked her up from school Monday afternoon and took her shopping at Kohl's. She needed a birthday outfit for her pictures so we had a bit of retail therapy.
So, that's a tiny snapshot of March. It was insane. We all survived.
Projects still in progress:
- Curt is in Godspell
- I am producing Godspell
- Festival is in June and ramping up technically now
- Oh - and Curt got the lead in an independent film over the weekend. WOOT. He'll be shooting in July and August.
How's that? Our lives are more than full here!
